In the last few days there’s been speculation that Apple might cease production of its iPod range. Reason – falling sales. OK, falling by Apple’s standards but they still outsell all other portable music players. Any development costs associated with the device must have been recouped long ago.
So, no more iPods? I hardly think so. The whole home entertainment dynamic is huge for Apple, which means gigantic by anyone else’s standards; Apple can’t turn their back on that. So what will happen? My guess would be a new range based in a single chassis and using cheaper components but delivering portable music. Think iPod Touch Mk3 (or is it 3?). As a CD ripping service we’re still going to be here and expect to be following Apple for many years via portable music devices.
